Halloween at the Coast Just Hits Different

2 min read

Halloween at the coast has its own personality.

There's no guarantee of crisp fall air, piles of leaves, or the kind of weather that makes you want to wear a sweater.

Sometimes it's still warm.

Sometimes it's windy.

Sometimes you leave the house in October wondering whether you need a jacket, shorts, or both.

That's coastal North Carolina for you.

The Porches Start Getting a Little Spooky

One of our favorite parts of this time of year is seeing what happens to homes around the communities we photograph.

A few pumpkins show up.

Then a few more.

Suddenly there's a skeleton hanging from a porch, fake cobwebs covering a front door, and somebody has apparently decided their house needs to become a full-blown haunted attraction.

And honestly?

We're here for it.

Some Neighborhoods Go All In

You can tell pretty quickly which neighborhoods take Halloween seriously.

There are the houses with one perfectly placed pumpkin.

There are the houses with a whole collection of pumpkins.

And then there are the houses where you wonder if they started decorating in July.

Those are the ones that make you slow down.

Especially when you're driving around for a photo shoot and suddenly realize you've found an unofficial neighborhood Halloween display.

Halloween Is Also a Community Thing

That's probably our favorite part.

Halloween has a way of getting people outside.

Kids are walking from house to house. Neighbors are sitting on porches. People are talking to people they might not normally see.

For a few hours, the neighborhood feels a little more connected.

And that's something we notice in the communities we work in all year long.

The best communities aren't just collections of houses.

They're places where people actually live.

Coastal Halloween Has Its Own Rules

You might not get the classic fall weather.

You might have to dodge beach traffic on the way home.

You may see a pumpkin sitting next to a palm tree.

And there's always a chance the weather has completely different plans than your Halloween costume.

But that's part of the fun.

Because Halloween doesn't have to look exactly like it does everywhere else.

Around here, it looks like coastal neighborhoods, decorated porches, pumpkins in the sunshine, kids running around, and maybe a little bit of sand where it definitely shouldn't be.

Honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way.
